East Timorese crocodile catchers have come to the Northern Territory to learn the tricks of the trade from Australian wranglers.

The East Timor Government has formed its first crocodile taskforce to curb the number of people being taken by the reptiles.

On average, one East Timorese is killed by a croc every month.

The taskforce is in the northern Australian city of Darwin to learn about croc management and public awareness campaigns.

Taskforce coordinator Sean Ferguson-Borrel says they are learning from the best.

"We know that just over an hour's flight away we're able to work and train with amongst the world's best of the best," he said.

The taskforce was given first-hand experience in croc wrangling on Wednesday.

The East Timorese wranglers helped Territory rangers capture a 4.5-metre saltwater crocodile in the Daly River.
