Australian Federal Police have decided to launch a formal investigation into allegations of fraud involving the Parliamentary Speaker, Peter Slipper.

One of Mr Slipper's staff members has accused him of misusing travel entitlements, claims he denies.

Police have been assessing the allegations since they became public more than a week ago and have now decided they need further investigation.

The A-F-P says investigators have already spoken with a number of potential witnesses in relation to the allegations.

Peter Slipper has stood down from his role as speaker while the allegations are being resolved.
