Fiji's new rugby coach Inoke Male says a more disciplined approach will lead to an improved performance on the field.

Mr Male, from Raralevu Village in Tailevu, was appointed coach after the fallout from Fiji's poor performance in last year's Rugby World Cup.

The Pacific nation recorded just one pool match victory against Namibia, and lost to rival Samoa

Mr Male told Pacific Beat he wanted players to combine their natural skills with a more focused approach to playing.

"We can run the ball from any part of the field. But the only thing that we're lacking is our discipline."

The former naval officer was a relatively late starter to international rugby, winning his first cap against Australia in 1998 aged 35.

He went on to play 22 times for Fiji, claiming a total of 15 caps and also represented Fiji at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

He has previously coached the Vatukoula, Tailevu and Navy rugby clubs.
