High winds and rough seas forecast in the area where a container ship leaking oil has run around off the north-east coast of New Zealand's North Island.

Salvage teams are racing to avoid an environmental disaster as they extract oil from the leaking ship, the Rena, which is stranded in the Bay of Plenty.

Rescue teams have put covers on the fuel tanks in case the vessel breaks up.

So far, only 10 tonnes of oil out of 1,00 tonnes has been transferred from the stricken vessel.

Leakage from the ship has already created a five-kilometre oil slick and killed some sea life.

Wildlife Centre director, Brett Gartrell, says the condition of surviving birds is of serious concern.
