The New Zealand Government has welcomed the handover of security in Afghanistan's Bamyan province to local security forces.

New Zealand troops have been stationed in Bamyan as part of a reconstruction team, which was helping to support the local government.

During the handover ceremony attended by local politicians, New Zealand troops performed the haka for Afghan forces.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully says he is confident local forces can continue to ward off attacks from the Taliban.

"We have been steadily building the capacity of the Bamyan leadership to take an increasingly important role," he said.

"[We are] handing over responsibility but remaining in a very active support capacity."
