Hong Kong told to revamp air pollution rules

The Hong Kong government has been told to hammer out a timetable for new air quality rules.

The order comes from the city's ombudsman amidst increasingly vocal criticism of pollution in the global financial hub.

The environmental group, Friends of the Earth Hong Kong, last year sent a formal complaint asking the territory's leaders for an explanation of its outdated air quality objectives.

Hong Kong's roadside air pollution hit record levels last year.

Emissions from factories in southern China combined with local emissions from power plants and transport, generate an almost daily thick blanket of haze over the teeming metropolis.
