Indonesia and the European Union have signed an agreement to fight against the trade in illegal timber.

The Voluntary Partnership Agreement aims to ensure that by 2013 all the timber products exported to Europe from Indonesia are certified, having been logged sustainably.

Indonesia's Forestry Minister, Hasan Zulkifli, says demand for cheap timber products from bargain-hunting consumers is one of the main reasons Indonesia struggles to control what is known locally as the "forest mafia".
