3,000 break Pacific territory's visa laws
Last Updated:
Nearly 3,000 foreigners are living illegally in a US-linked territory in the Pacific, its governor says.
Benigno Fitial, governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) said that is an increase of 1,000 overstayers, compared with 2,000 the year before.
He has called for them all to be deported and says they are competing with local residents for a limited number of jobs.
Mr Fitial says the problem has become worse since the United States took control of the Marianas' immigration in 2009.
Governor Fitial says he raised the issue with US immigration authorities during a visit to Washington last month.
He also warned locals in CNMI that it is against the law to harbor an illegal foreigner.
