The French government says it is sending iodine tablets to its overseas territories in the Pacific as a preventive measure, in response to the nuclear threat in Japan.

The supply of tablets will go to New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia.

A statement from the French government says at this stage no contamination risk exists.

Meanwhile, in French Polynesia all Air Tahiti Nui flights scheduled from Papeete to Tokyo this week have been cancelled.

In New Caledonia, the French High Commission says an inbound flight from Tokyo today will undergo radioactivity checks.

The 14th Pacific Games are underway in New Caledonia.
