The United States says it is 'repositioning' some of its naval and air forces in the region near Libya, as Western nations weigh possible intervention against Moamar Gaddafi's regime.

The US Defence Department, the Pentagon, has said the 'repositioning' is to provide what it calls 'options and flexibility'.

The comments came from the Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Dave Lapan, although he did not elaborate on how exactly the forces might be used.

Speaking in Geneva, the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, said the US was not planning any naval operations targeting the northern African nation.

The US has a regular military presence in the Mediterranean Sea and two aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf area.
