Thousands of anti-government protesters have gathered in the Thai capital Bangkok for the latest in a series of rallies calling for the release from prison of their leaders.

An estimated 15,000 Red Shirts gathered amid a heavy security presence.

Police say 5,000 officers were deployed for the event.

Mass protests by the Red Shirts in April and May last year left 90 people dead when demonstrators clashed with the army.

Some Red Shirt leaders were jailed on terror charges after the clashes.

Meanwhile the rival Yellow Shirts have also rallied, demanding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign over his handling of a long-running border dispute with Cambodia.
