Australia jails Indonesian for people smuggling
Last Updated:
An Australian court has jailed an Indonesian fisherman for five years for people smuggling.
41-year-old Bumiaman pleaded guilty in the Northern Territory Supreme Court to captaining a smuggling boat into Australian waters with 49 people on board.
The court heard that the boat was loaded with people and food when Bumiaman arrived in Lombok in Indonesia, before it was sailed to Australia.
Justice Stephen Southwood said the man was poor and was motivated by need not greed, but that he had still played a vital part in the smuggling operation.
