The United States Geological Survey says a 6.3 magnitude earthquake has been recorded south of the Fiji islands.

The quake's epicentre was 530 kilometres west-south-west of Tonga.

USGS spokeswoman Jessica Sigala said the quake was too deep and too remote to cause damage or a tsunami.

"It's in a pretty remote area of the ocean - it's about 200 miles, or 320 kilometres away from Nadoi island which is in Fiji.

"At this time, there haven't been any reports of it being felt, or any damage being reported.

"There have not been any tsunami warnings issued.

This earthquake was about 550 kilometres deep, and tsunamis usually happen with shallow earthquakes which are about 30 kilometres.

"This earthquake was way too deep for a tsunami to occur," she said.
