New York's main airports are operating again, after heavy snow in north-east America forced shutdowns and thousands of flights to be cancelled.

Travellers stranded at New York's LaGuardia airport are preparing to spend a second night sleeping in cots in the terminal.

The airport has reopened but how many flights will get off the ground is unclear.

A full day after the snow emergency began, much of the east coast remains in gridlock.

New York City's mayor Michael Bloomberg acknowledges there will be an economic cost.

"It's the lack of commerce that takes place," he said.

Monday and Tuesday were big shopping days and that didn't happen.

Workers are continuing to plow and salt snowy roads, but many mightn't be cleared until Wednesday.
