Global praise for awarding of Nobel Peace Prize to Chinese dissident
Last Updated:
Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan has joined US President Barack Obama in praising the Nobel Committee decision to award this year's Peace Prize to Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.
Our North America correspondent Lisa Millar reports that the US President praised Liu for winning the award and called on China to immediately release the activist - a demand backed by European leaders.
Australia's deputy prime minister Wayne Swan wouldn't go that far saying he welcomed the awarding of the prize but could not give any other comment.
Mr Swan is in Washington for IMF and World Bank meetings where warnings have been issued over the fragile state of the global economy.
