Pacific nations still tax havens says OECD
Last Updated:
The Paris based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development says several Pacific island states continue to be used as offshore tax havens.
That's despite their governments signing up to internationally accepted tax standards.
The director of the OECD's Centre for Tax Policy Jeffrey Owens says the biggest incentive for Pacific countries to clean up their systems is reputation.
"I mean in today's environment you don't want to have a reputation as a shady place, a place that's open for business whether it's drug money, whether it's your mafia money or whether it's your tax evaders," he said.
"Enhancing your reputation is the biggest benefit that they get."
