The Queen, who is New Zealand's head of state, has asked Prime Minister John Key to send her good wishes to those affected by the magnitude 7 quake.
Her comments came after Prime Minister John Key cancelled a trip to Europe, which was to have included a visit to the royals' Scottish residence Balmoral.
