Southern China and Vietnam are preparing for the arrival of Typhoon Conson, which is strengthening in the South China Sea after battering the Philippines earlier this week.

Conson is reportedly strengthening as it moves towards the Chinese island of Hainan, with an alert issued for high waves.

More than 24,000 fishing boats called back to port and some flights and ferries to the mainland have been suspended, stranding hundreds of travellers on the popular tourist island.

The typhoon will then head towards Vietnam's northern provinces, where the government has evacuated more than 200,000 people deployed nearly 3,000 troops in preparation for the storm.

At least 39 people were killed when Typhoon Conson swept across the Philippines main island of Luzon.
