An Australian man will stand trial in a Thai court for joining the redshirts protests in Bangkok.

Thai prosecutors have told the Bangkok court that Connor Purcell will go to trial.

He's charged with breaching the state of emergency by giving speeches from the protest stage in central Bangkok in April.

At least one key red shirt leader is expected to be called as a witness by the defence.

The accused says he was trying to prevent violence by explaining military rules of engagement.

The maximum sentence is two years.

But one prosecutor has told the ABC that an amnesty being discussed by the government may lead to the defendant's release.
