A former New Zealand Labour minister who admitted using his government credit card to access pornography has been dumped from the Opposition's front bench.

Shane Jones was one of three Labour politicians demoted for misusing their credit cards.

Mr Jones called it "Shane's day of shame" after he admitted under pressure that he had spent hundreds of dollars on adult movies, which he watched in hotel rooms.

He had also taken a chartered plane trip, and bought sports gear and wine on his official credit card.

Labour leader Phil Goff has now stripped Mr Jones of his opposition portfolios and he has been relegated to the back bench.

Mr Jones was tipped to be a potential front-runner for the Labour leadership.
