A South Korean man has threatened to blow up the Australian embassy in Seoul following a controversial disqualification in the winter Olympics.

In the final of the women's short track speed skating relay event, Australian judge James Hewish disqualified the South Korean team which finished first. As a result they were denied the gold medal, handing the win to arch-foe China.

Outrage at the controversial decision has led a man to send a threat to the Australian embassy in Seoul.

The man - who said he would blow up the Australian embassy - has been arrested after South Korean police traced his telephone.

Australian officials have described the threat as a hoax.

A similar decision by James Hewish to disqualify a South Korean skater in 2002 prompted thousands of angry emails to the International Olympic Committee.
