The world's biggest car-maker, Toyota, has denied it's sacrificed its commitment to safety in the pursuit of global market share.

The company has recalled millions of vehicles worldwide because of an accelerator problem in some models.

For the first time since the global recall was announced a senior Toyota executive in Japan has spoken publicly.

Company vice-president Shinichi Sasaki says Toyota is extremely sorry for making its customers uneasy.

But Mr Sasaki denies that Toyota has sacrificed its commitment to safety and quality in its quest to become the world's biggest car-maker.

The recall has affected about eight-million vehicles worldwide, with Toyota models in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America the latest to be affected.
