Taiwan seeking US frigates to replace old fleet
Last Updated:
Taiwan is reported to be planning to buy eight second-hand Perry-class frigates from the United States.
Taipei-based China Times says the plan involves arming them with a version of the advanced Aegis Combat System.
It uses computers and radar to attack multiple targets, as well as sophisticated missile launch technology.
Taiwan's Defence Ministry says ageing frigates now serving the navy need to be phased out, but it hasn't decided on the replacement ships.
The China Times report comes less than a week after the US Defence Department announced it had approved the sale of Patriot missile equipment to Taiwan as part of an already agreed package.
