The United States President Barack Obama is leading his nation in mourning after an army doctor allegedly shot 13 people dead at a US military base.

An investigation is underway after the shooting on Thursday at the Fort Hood base in Texas.

An army psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, opened fire on people lining up at the base's medical centre.

12 soldiers and a civilian died and another 30 people were wounded.

Major Hasan is in hospital under armed guard.

President Obama is urging Americans not to speculate about the Muslim officer's motives before investigators speak to him.
