Police in Thailand are preparing to lay charges against four people, who allegedly spread rumours about the King's health, causing millions of dollars in losses as the stock market plunged.

King Bhumipol Adulyadej has been in hospital since mid-September suffering a lung infection.

Rumours about his condition caused panic selling on October 14 and 15 when the Stock Exchange of Thailand fell as much as 5 percent and 8 percent respectively.

The four are likely to face charges under Thailand's computer-related crimes act.

They're also being investigated for possible securities violations.

The 81 year old King is revered in Thailand which has the world's toughest lese majesty laws aimed at protecting his image.

He remains in hospital but was seen in public last week.
