New president elected in Marshall Islands
Last Updated:
Traditional chief in Marshall Islands Jurelang Zedkaia has been elected president by a slender margin, replacing Litokwa Tomeing who was ousted in a no-confidence vote last week.
Mr Zedkaia, the parliamentary speaker, was elected in swift ballot of legislators on Monday.
He defeated the only other nominee, former president Kessai Note, 17 to 15.
Mr Zedkaia is a five-term senator and paramount chief for the capital atoll of Majuro.
He was speaker during Mr Tomeing's 22 months in office.
Mr Tomeing was the first leader to lose a no-confidence vote in the 30-year history of constitutional government in the former US Trust territory.
