Suicide bombers in Iraq have killed more than 130 people and wounded at least 500 in what appears to be the deadliest attack in Iraq in two years.

There are fears there will be more big bombings ahead of elections in Iraq in January.

The two car bombs exploded almost simultaneously - apparently targeting the justice ministry and a provincial government building nearby.

The buildings were destroyed and cars on the street were incinerated.

The death toll steadily rose through the day as rescue workers spent hours pulling bodies from the wreckage.

Hundreds more people were wounded.

Hospitals have struggled to deal with the number of dead and injured.

So far no group has claimed credit for the bombing, but many Iraqis indicate insurgent groups - possibly linked to Al Qaeda - who appear determined to destabilsze the government ahead of national elections scheduled for January.
