Hundreds of people in the northeast of the Philippines are fleeing coastal areas before Typhoon Lupit makes landfall.

Big waves and rising sea levels spawned by the typhoon have prompted more than 2,000 people to evacuate to safer ground in the province of Cagayan.

A seawall has collapsed, sporadic flooding has been reported, and power cut-offs have been experienced in the province.

Security forces fighting rebels on Mindanao island in the south have been deployed to the north as it recovers from the ravages of two previous storms that killed nearly 2,000 people.

Five hundred soldiers have also been retained on rescue and relief operations.

The United Nations says it will boost its fundraising effort to feed and shelter the tens of thousands of people who have been displaced.
