The United States has held a ceremony before sending home remains believed to be from Americans who died during helicopter crashes during the Vietnam War.

A military honour guard transferred two boxes of remains to a US Air Force plane to be flown from Hanoi's Noi Bai airport to Hawaii, where they will be further analysed.

Since 1973, 645 Americans listed as missing during the Vietnam War have been repatriated and identified.

The US says more than one thousand are still unaccounted for.
