Swine flu infections are beginning to decline in the southern hemisphere but picking up in several Asian countries, the World Health Organisation says.

More than 1,400 people have now died from the virus worldwide.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says countries where a deceleration has been recorded include Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.

But several Asian countries, such as Thailand, India and Vietnam, are seeing an active spread of the virus.

Swine flu was declared a pandemic - a mass infection moving between nations - on June 11.

In all, nearly 180,000 confirmed infections have been reported to the WHO.

But the real figure is likely to be higher, as indvidual cases no longer have to be tested or reported.
