Storm grounds oil tanker in Taiwan
Last Updated:
An oil tanker has run aground in Taiwan in heavy seas generated by tropical storm Linfa.
The national weather bureau says Linfa - which originally was designated a cyclone - is moving along the Taiwan Strait, generating strong winds and torrential rains.
The 498-tonne oil tanker ran aground off the south coast while sailing from Japan to Singapore.
Taiwan's coastguards have rescued nine crew from the Colombo Queen and are watching it closely because of concerns the cargo may spill and oil spread along the coast.
Shipping services to Taiwan's outlying islands have been interrupted by high waves.
The bureau says there are wind gusts of 90 kilometres per hour and Linfa is also hitting the Chinese coastline.
