Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed a retired army general to protect the national team during local and overseas tours.

Major General Lawrence Fernando's appointment as a security consultant comes after the national team was attacked by armed militants in Lahore in March during a tour of Pakistan.

Seven Sri Lankan cricketers and an assistant coach were injured in the attack, which left eight Pakistanis dead.
